"Who Wants to be on Vestry?"

It’s that time of year when many phone calls or coffee hour chats will include the fateful question, “Would you please consider running for vestry?”

Traditionally, many people view vestry membership as similar to serving on the board of directors of a not-for-profit agency. And truly, there are many similarities. As our new Vestry Resource Guide explains, “Vestry members are legal representatives and agents of a parish, charged with specific responsibilities by the canons of The Episcopal Church. They share leadership responsibilities with the rector.”

If this is the main dimension of your church vestry, perhaps the vestry could benefit from some prayerful discernment about how it provides leadership and direction that supports vibrant ministry and growth. Here are some questions to get that conversation started:

  • Do our vestry and rector share a hopeful vision for the impact of our congregation’s ministries?
  • How does our church support people in discovering and doing what they really love to do?
  • How open are we to new collaborations, perhaps with other denominations, to stabilize or grow our ability to serve Jesus?
  • How aware are we of changing demographics or needs in the neighborhood in which our church is located? When was the last time the vestry discussed this?

Vision motivates and inspires. A vestry that enjoys discussions about vision and creative solutions may find it easier to attract members who are energized to play a role in such leadership. As the Vestry Resource Guide  explains, “The first step in raising up new leaders is to be an enthusiastic ambassador for the vestry’s emerging mission and vision.”

Whether you're a new vestry member or a seasoned veteran, the newly revised Vestry Resource Guide is essential reading. With a deliberate focus on the importance of lay and clergy leadership teams, you'll find comprehensive information and advice about the ministry of the vestry, leading faith communities, stewardship, and navigating clergy transitions. Learn more or order here.
