The Second [Meatless] Friday of Lent

Photo credit: Lindsey SeegersMy college was adjacent to St. Stephen’s in Newport News, Virginia. This is how I found—and fell for—the Episcopal Church. I befriended the rector, who later drove over seven hours to marry Andrew and me in Baltimore. Among the many wise and provocative tidbits Father Scott shared with me, his perspective on a priest’s attire remains in my mind. In regards to my question on priests wearing various colors, or traveling collarless, he said (something along the lines of): If you’re not wearing black, of whom are really you thinking? To him, the modesty of his attire seemed to help him center on the purpose of his profession and ministry.

I bring this up because it’s this very thought that returns to me when I consider giving up a food indulgence for Lent. Honestly, my preference for chocolate is not keeping me from God—prioritizing my time interferes far more. My eating less fatty foods is not a true sacrifice because, at the heart of things, I am considering my waistline more than God. Outside of Lent, this tactic would simply be called Dieting. These are my own convictions on the matter, and I mention this to preface that today’s pizza recipe need not be a contradiction for Lent. This is a pizza so simple in both preparation and assembly, it would provide a lovely opportunity to cook as a family. Andrew and I are baking it this Friday; let me know when you do, too.
