There IS an App for That

Our diocese just added a mobile phone app.

It’s not fancy – but it allows folks to have at their fingertips the key parts of our website: a news blog, upcoming events, directories of clergy and lay leaders, and a church finder with maps. We’re hoping to add the link to our Facebook page and Twitter accounts later this week.

I’m thrilled that we’re exploring the mobile arena. If we are going to attract new people and grow the church, then we need to communicate in ways people expect.

I’ve heard studies predict that the cell phone will be the primary connection to the Internet by 2020. It may be even sooner. Consider that in 2010, 40 percent of adults went online using their mobile phone (Check out this Pew report).

The best applications do more than re-package existing online components. They re-imagine ways to make connections, to use the technology in completely new ways.

Our diocesan mobile app is just the first step. I’m interested: What are you doing with mobile applications? What Episcopal Church app do you want to download – and share with your friends?

Let’s dream together.
