Press Release Tips

Writing a press release is different than other writing. Here are some tips to help you get started!

Things to avoid when writing a press release:

 • Never, ever, provide incorrect information. This is the proverbial kiss of death!
 • Get to the point quickly and right at the beginning.
 • Proof, proof, proof! Good grammar is still important.
 • Write in the objective third person, no “we,” “ours,” or “you”

Things to remember for a successful release:

 • Include a primary contact’s information, including cell phone.
 • Make sure your story is newsworthy for the particular media’s audience.
 • Your headline should be compelling. You only get one chance to have your release read all the way through.
 • A good release should be one page or less. If the reporter is interested and needs more information they will contact you.
 • Be clear about the action you want the media to take — human-interest story for an editorial story, upcoming event to be promoted, new program of interest to their readers, etc.
 • Again, contact the media person first by phone and find out how they prefer to receive press releases. Confirm that they are the correct person for your stories.
