Laundry Love

No, this isn’t a blog about meeting Mr. or Ms. Right at your local Laundromat. It is about God’s love and how people in a growing number of locations are sharing that love by doing someone else’s laundry.

(Thanks to the Diocese of Los Angeles for not only this video, but their ongoing "Just Action" video series.)

It’s also in recognition of – and appreciation for – the way our bishops and other congregational leaders are embracing video as a way to tell our stories. Video cameras built into cell phones, free or low cost editing programs, and social media make it easier for people to share the Good News about their ministry not only with members of their congregation, friends, and family but also with what I like to call “the people we don’t know yet.”

Video messages have a power that is different than written text. There is something about ththe experience of seeing and hearing a message that often makes it more memorable than reading it.

Recent video messages that have stayed with me range from a fun video created by a parish in the UK looking for a new vicar to Bishop McConnell (Pittsburgh) explaining the meaning of Lent using roughly drawn visuals of a cross and a smile-y face and Brian McVey's compelling message related to the very real problem of human trafficking in the United States.

Are you using video to tell your story? Has it helped you build interest in your congregation and your ministry? Do you have resources to share with congregations interested in using video to tell their story? Please share your stories here, and your resources in the Your Turn section of this site.

(If you are interested in learning more about using video in your congregation, visit our topics page and type Videos into the search field for a list of related articles, blog posts, and resources.)
