James Mathes
James R. Mathes, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, has served this community for the past eleven years. Prior to completing his seminary education, Bishop Mathes worked in two boarding schools, his alma mater, The Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, where he worked in the alumni and development office, and at St. Andrew’s-Sewanee an Episcopal school in Sewanee, Tennessee, where he taught mathematics, coached soccer and cross country, and later served as director of development. Bishop Mathes brings to the diocese an uncommon mix of pastoral ministry and nonprofit administration experience. He and his wife, Terri, have two adult children and a black lab named Hawkeye.
